Painter Andrew Winter was best known for his dramatic seascapes of the rugged Maine coast. A native of Estonia, Winter began sailing at the age of twenty, serving as a mate on American and British steamships. With firsthand knowledge of the ocean, Winter sought to depict its power and stark elemental beauty.
