Alfred R. Waud, a British-born American illustrator, earned a reputation as one of the preeminent artist-journalists of his era through his lively and detailed sketches. Born in London, Waud honed his artistic skills at the School of Design at Somerset House and the Royal Academy. Upon his arrival to the United States, he went to work for Harper’s Weekly. Assigned to the Army of the Potomac, he documented events through the duration of the Civil War.
