Plein air, or outdoor, painter William Daniel Pfahl renders Pittsburgh’s cityscapes and landscapes in oil and pastel. When painting portraits and figural works in three-hour sessions, the artist creates magical, three-dimensional illusions on a two-dimensional canvas. “In a small way, I feel my own work has a narrative that speaks to man’s powerful relationship to nature and [the] environment. We are here for a short time. I feel that I’ve accomplished an appreciation of the world when I paint it,” he says.
