Although perhaps best known for his portrayals of the American West, watercolorist William Matthews has explored a diverse range of subjects, from depictions of wildlife to industrial scenes. Matthews was drawn to watercolor painting at an early age, captivated by the transparency and translucency of works by Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent on view during a museum visit with his mother. Since then, he has developed a sophisticated understanding of watercolor technique as a primarily self-taught artist.
