Wendy Savage holds a BA in Photography with a music minor from Florida State University and an MFA in Visual Arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. She is a retired Medical Photographer and Visual Artist for the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Wendy’s 30 plus years working alongside artists, photographers, scientists and medical professionals influences and informs her artwork. Her fascination with the natural world and her ongoing concerns regarding environmental issues are important areas of interest and focus. Wendy hopes to draw attention to her concerns regarding our environment. Her art making process is a combination of mixed media, photography and digital image manipulation. The work begins with basic photographic image captures as the foundation. She then builds upon the image with layers of textures from scans of papers, maps, bee hive material, wax and a variety of ephemera utilizing Adobe Photoshop to create the final composite imagery.
In addition to her career as a medical photographer, Wendy has taught photography, digital imaging and design at the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She co-developed an internship program mentoring students from Rochester Institute of Technology, Randolph Community College, The School of Science and Math, and NC State University veterinary medical students. Her teaching at Meredith College Art
Department included instruction in photography, digital imaging, color theory and book design. Wendy has also taught summer art classes at Artspace, supporting underprivileged students during their weeklong summer art classes. Presently, she is working with the North Carolina Museum of Art on the Four Seasons Photography Walk initiative where she will be leading a Macro Photography tour for museum volunteers.
Her professional affiliations include Artspace, The National Association of Photoshop Professionals, and Art & Science Collaborations among others. She has received two Artist Project grants from United Arts Council and has had many opportunities exhibiting her work throughout North Carolina and the United States. Her work can be found in many books and publications that both support the arts and sciences.
