Wang Jiyuan was born in Wujin, Jiangsu Province, China, and studied at the Shanghai College of Art. His education and travels in Europe and Japan exposed him to both traditional Chinese and Western painting techniques. In 1942, Wang left China and later settled in the United States, establishing himself in New York, where he founded a school dedicated to traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. His work reflects a synthesis of both traditional Chinese brushwork and contemporary European approaches to painting.
