With a career spanning more than six decades, painter and printmaker Vija Celmins has gained recognition for her meticulously rendered grayscale representations of select natural phenomena, including the ocean, night sky, and desert. The artist works almost exclusively from found scientific photographs, cropping her source material to eliminate the point of reference, horizon, or discernable depth of field. Celmins often spends months reworking a single composition, continually experimenting with variations in density, surface detail, and tonal range.
