Verena Levine is a self-taught American folk artist who has been making quilts for more than twenty years. Beginning mostly with pieced quilts, during the past ten years she has made only pictorial appliques quilts, obtaining ideas from her surroundings. Verena likes the effect achieved by the juxtaposition of many different prints, and she uses the design and texture of the fabric to its best advantage. Her facility with the scissors is extraordinary, conveying lifelike and often whimsical images of people and animals in urban and rural settings.
