Tim Yanke is a Detroit-based abstract expressionist painter whose work draws on the colors and culture of the American Southwest. He is known for his depictions of dragonflies and his American flag series known as “Yanke Doodles.” Yanke Doodle (Pledge of Allegiance) was inspired by the events of September 11, 2001, when he and his son installed a flagpole in their front yard as a symbol of patriotism and remembrance to the lives lost. The nontraditional colors in his “Yanke Doodle” flags reference the many cultures, countries, and communities who had come to the United States.
