Shellburne Thurber investigates the connections between constructed space and human presence. “Inhabited spaces tell you a lot about the people who live and work in them and are more revealing in some ways than anything a person might say to describe themselves…A portrait of somebody’s home gets at who they are indirectly but often more accurately,” Thurber says. She has photographed such sites as homes of family and friends, roadside motels, churches, abandoned hospitals and homes, and the renovation of the Boston Athenæum and the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site. She is especially intrigued by spaces that are both public and private.
