Ruth Owens is a figurative painter and video artist. Born to a White, German mother and a Black, American military serviceman from Georgia, the nomadic lifestyle of her childhood was complicated by restrictions imposed on mixed families. This experience was critical in forming her cultural identity and, by extension, her artistic practice: she frequently culls imagery from her family’s super-8 film archive to explore themes of family dynamics and personal memory.
