Peter Frederick Rothermel

Peter Frederick Rothermel was born in Nescopeck, Pennsylvania, probably in 1817. He was trained as a surveyor and then as a sign painter. He became a portrait painter in Philadelphia, but turned to history painting, then considered the worthiest subject for a professional artist. Rothermel is best known for his dramatically charged paintings of historical, biblical, and imagined events.
