Patrick Pagnano

Armed with a Leica camera and a passion for street photography, Patrick Pagnano set out every day to capture the chaotic, freewheeling energy of New York City’s diverse boroughs. This practice is vividly illustrated in the images he shot one night at Brooklyn’s Empire Rollerdome in 1980. At that time, large crowds of predominantly Black and LGBTQ New Yorkers visited the Empire to dance and skate while disco music played, pioneering moves built around rhythmic dips, spins, and turns. “Once I entered the rink, I was transported to another world and was in my element…The skaters, their talents, enthusiasm, joy, and sense of abandonment were inspirational… [it] was electric,” he said.
