Oscar Rios

Oscar Rios is a painter and sculptor whose stylized figural works are inspired by the history, customs, and spirituality of Guatemala. His terracotta sculptures depict members of cofradías, religious brotherhoods of men and women that also hold civil and political standing in Guatemalan villages. Although originally established to propagate Catholicism by Spanish colonizers, cofradías embody the syncretic culture of Guatemala, overseeing rituals that blend aspects of Christianity and ancient Mayan traditions.
