Nickolas Muray (born Miklos Murai) was a New York-based portrait and fashion photographer and leading practitioner of color photography. After immigrating from Budapest, Hungary, Muray worked in New York City doing engraving and color separation at the Stockinger Printing Company. He then opened his own photography studio, focusing on portraiture. Later, he shifted to advertising photography, producing one of the first illustration from a color photograph to be published in Ladies’ Home Journal. Working in a soft-focus style, Muray photographed figures from the arts, literature, and political worlds; he also produced portraits of Babe Ruth during the1927 season with the New York Yankees. Muray said, “Photography, fortunately, to me has not only been a profession but also a contact between people—to understand human nature and record, if possible, the best in each individual.”
