Mary Babcock is known for intersecting her visual and performance art with social activism. Mending as an “actual reparative action” and as a “metaphor for personal, social, and environmental change” are central themes in her art. Her work is driven by a need to understand, critique, and speak about her culture, and is rooted in the desire to bridge two prevailing paradigms for art-making: art as beauty and art as social criticism.
Kerry Phillips creates sculptures and installations that connect performance and social practice and are rooted in remembrance and storytelling, influenced by her grandmothers. Her work uses local materials, “ranging from things found to collected experiences and retold stories. Often, [she will] alter a space using architectural interventions and enlist the public’s participation in the gathering of materials or through performative interactions.”
