In his sculptural canvases and installations, Mark Messersmith envisions apocalyptic, interspecies battles unfolding within Florida’s ever-shrinking wilderness. When Messersmith moved to the Panhandle region in the mid-1980s, he was immediately struck by a tense coexistence of the lush natural world and the onslaught of rapid property development. To illustrate this struggle, the artist paints densely arranged vignettes in high-keyed colors, with dizzying perspectives and brilliant light effects.
