Marisa Darasavath is an accomplished painter, and one of the leading contemporary artists from Laos. Her stylized work pivots around issues of female gender and representation, spanning across intimate scenes of domesticity to extravagant displays of celebration and harvest.
She elevates the role of women in her work in spite of the patriarchal society of her country. She investigates her personal relationships with her mother and women within her own community. The theme of “Mother and Child” also remains a staple throughout the artist’s oeuvre. She often expresses the female figure in the midst of languid movement through bold curvilinear forms, a vibrant palette of colour and the use of subtle appropriation of traditional art and motifs. Her canvases embody an undeniable energy and magnetism.
Marisa graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts (previously called Faculty of Fine Arts) in Vientiane. Since then, she has exhibited her work throughout Asia. Selected exhibitions include the Singapore Biennale 2013, ‘Voices – A Contemporary Art Exhibition by 6 Laotian Artists’, M Gallery, Singapore (2011), ‘LIVE AND LET LIVE: Creators of Tomorrow’, Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, Japan (2009). Her paintings are collected by the Singapore Art Museum, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and in private collections.
Marisa lives and works in Laos, where she finds constant source of inspiration from her local environment and people.
