Margie Livingston

I’ve always built objects as models for painting, to clarify my ideas about light, form, and space. The paintings may look like abstractions, but they’re concerned with the phenomena (perceptions of space, for example, as in “Daylight with Red Gel”) elucidated by the models.

Lately I’ve grown curious about how painting influences the way I build things. Reversing my usual process, I’m now using paint to construct objects. One is an 8-pound acrylic sphere (“White Line”) formed from bands of white paint as tightly wound as a ball of string. It’s both a three-dimensional painting and a sculpture made of paint.

Letting accident and discovery meet invention and experimentation, my goal is to make works that surprise me and pull me into new territory as I investigate the properties of paint pushed into three dimensions.
