Marcie Dunn Ramsey received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967 from Emmanuel College in Boston. She studied art at the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, the University of Maine, and the University of Maryland. In her past lives she has been an art teacher, portraitist, commercial artist, illustrator, and printmaker. Her painting career began in ernest in the early 1990s, and she has been devoting most of her energies to working in oil on canvas, trying to capture the ephemeral world of the river in its many guises. She is currently representeed by the Carla Massoni Gallery in Chestertown, Maryland and the Bay St. Gallery in Beaufort, South Carolina.
“My work is an exploration into the relationship between the natural world and the human psyche. I live on the Chester River in Maryland, and it is the prime focus of my work in a metaphysical as well as visual way. The eloquent gestures of looping, twisted reeds, the intersections in a stand of marsh grass, the staccato shapes of dark and light stalks, or the muted forms of submerged leaves act as elements in a language of secret signs that if deciphered might initiate the viewer to a new level of comprehension. The tension between the marsh’s vital chaos and the serene flatness of the reflective surface of the water is also mysterious, like Alice’s looking glass, and draws the viewer into it and under its spell.”
