Manuel Neri was widely recognized for his painted sculptures that straddle conceptual and figurative styles. Dedicated to the human form, he rendered his large female sculptures in inexpensive materials such as burlap, cardboard, or wire before encasing them in plaster, bronze, and marble. Neri considered the human figure a blank canvas through which he could express distinct ideas, body languages, and emotional states.
