Magnolia Laurie

“Within my paintings and installations, the structures and systems created are illogical; they are delicate and makeshift in a way that may not endure their own weight, let alone the impending disruptions. Yet, they are made, and to me they reference the sustained need to try, to build, to create, even in the face of complete futility. They depict the instinctive, sometimes manic, and desperate human act of building and within them I am thinking about the cyclical rise and fall of civilizations.”

Magnolia Laurie received her BA in Critical Social Thought from Mount Holyoke College, a Post Baccalaureate Degree in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute, and her MFA from the Mount Royal School of Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art. After graduate school, she became an artist in residence at the Creative Alliance from 2007 to 2010. Her work has been shown at Causey Contemporary and DRWR in Brooklyn, Hamiltonian Gallery in Washington, D.C., SCOPE Miami, as well as the Creative Alliance and other spots in Baltimore. Magnolia is a current Artist Fellow for the Hamiltonian Gallery in Washington, D.C., and she lives and works in Baltimore.
