Lindsay Welch is a self-taught photographer with a focus on documentary photography. Her images reflect the deep intimacy she develops with her subjects, often living in homes and villages with the people she is photographing. All of her photographs are of ‘found’ moments she encounters in the lives of others. None of the scenes have been set up or prearranged. As such, she offers us a true glimpse into peoples’ lives.
The photographs seen here were taken in 2002 as part of a project documenting life of the Miskito and Garifuna people on the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua. The Garifuna culture has since been added to UNESCO’s list of protected cultural heritages.
Lindsay has spent extensive time photographing overseas, including long term projects in Mexico, Nicaragua, and Rwanda. She currently resides on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts with her two dogs.
