Laurie Wohl began painting in 1976 but it was not until a decade later that the artist started working in what she calls the “unweaving process.” In order to make the canvas feel more open and alive, Wohl cuts slits into the fabric to pull out the warp and the weft threads; she then reconstructs the threads with colored, handmade paper and beads. For the artist, her works are meditations on the themes of roots and memories, as well as ritual narratives. The beads symbolize prayers and marking points, visually forming a rhythmic counterpoint to the unraveled strands. Wohl’s works evoke a spirit of mystery and celebration in keeping with the oldest tradition of handcrafted textiles.
