Judith Larzelere is a world renowned art quilt innovator. She developed her signature style in the 1980’s, a combination of machine strip piecing and machine strip quilting. Her quilts are abstract, not based on block composition, and emphasize color interaction and movement. They have great impact when view at a distance and reveal detail and nuance upon closer inspection. Her work is owned by many corporate and private collections and published extensively
Larzelere has taught at Arrowmont, Banff, Haystack, Penland craft schools and numerous workshops in Europe and the U.S. She has a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Rutgers University and has exhibited her quilts extensively in the U.S., Japan, and Germany. She was included in the Japanese group show ”The 30 Distinguished Quilters of the World” in Tokyo, 2003, and received a grant from the Berkshire Taconic Foundation for artists in mid-career fall of 1999 and fall 2004. You can find her works pictured in 6 Quilt National catalogs and many books and magazines surveying contemporary quilts. She was profiled in the January 2010 issue of AQS Magazine. Larzelere has been selected to be the Fellow in Craft for 2014 by the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts. She has a quilt currently on tour with a juried SAQA show “Seasonal Palette.”
