Joyce Kozloff

Born in Somerville, New Jersey, Joyce Kozloff graduated in 1964 from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1967 from Columbia University, New York. Kozloff was a founder of the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 1970s. The movement was an effort to challenge the stigma that modern art had put on ornamentation. The artists drew inspiration from arts and cultures outside the mainstream of modern art. Kozloff said of this cultural melding: “I would not enjoy a world in which cultures became homogeneous and lost their singularity. All my work is appropriated from outside sources; I create a hybrid, a fusion of diverse materials.”
