John Bott

Several years ago my style began to change toward a more spontaneous and freer handling of paint and a more direct relationship with nature. I did a series of works that I called Jazz Landscape Improvisations; the spirit of that title is appropriate to my current work. My paintings are neither pictures of landscapes nor attempts to visualize music. They do, however, relate to both landscape painting and music. They attempt to arrive at an original synthesis of visual ideas.

Jazz has long been a special interest of mine. I like the rhythms and spirit of jazz and I especially value the tradition of improvisation. In my paintings I try to create a structure and then improvise to express my ideas and emotions. Color is my chief means of both structure and expressions.
