Joel Shapiro creates angular designs that often resemble humans in motion. Combining aspects of geometric abstraction and figurative sculpture, his works are constructed out of multicolored painted blocks and soaring planes. Shapiro suspends sculptural elements from the ceiling, wall, and floor, “exploring the projection of thought into space without the constraint of architecture.” His works playfully elicit a sense of movement and engage the viewers’ relationships with space.
