James Eder was born in Buffalo, New York in 1942. He earned a BS from State University of New York in 1963, followed by an MS from the University of Nebraska in 1966.
He worked as a nuclear physicist in Germany until 1973, at which time he returned to the United States to study art full-time. He was awarded a Master of Arts in Art Education from Northern Arizona University in 1975 and was a doctoral candidate at Arizona State University. Eder has worked as a free-lance artist since 1974. He taught at Phoenix College from 1978-81 and Scottsdale Community College from 1987-92.

Prints and paintings by James Eder can be found in private and public collections such as First Interstate Bank, Honeywell Corporation, Sky Harbor Airport, Talley Industries, the US Embassy in Moscow, and Valley National Bank.
