Javier Romero

Artist Javier Romero was born in Spain and is now living and working in New York. His resume includes a large number of solo and group shows along with catalogues. Most recently he has been the recipient of the MacDowell Colony Residency. His interdisciplinary work— drawing, collage, photography, or sculpture—exists on the frontier of abstraction and representation, and his last series of works are centered on the relationship between urban/spatial studies and gardens as artificial nature.

“My work shows the influence of my architectural background and my interest in formal landscaping as artificial nature,” the artist states. “Formally, the works are in between abstraction and geometry with minimal punctuations of representational elements. Working largely on paper, these works also explore the territory between different mediums—drawing, collage and photography—-using modest materials such as graphite and found images.”

Romero’s Gardens Floor Plans series consists of graphite and colored pencil drawings on paper with cutouts of photographs of gardens appropriated from old magazines.
