George Ortman

While often perceived as a precursor to minimalism, George Ortman’s brightly colored, geometric work defies stylistic categorization. Combining elements of painting and sculpture, Ortman arranged shapes of diverse materials in complex patterns to create visually dynamic compositions. Ortman explained that he extended the picture plane through his use of relief to “heighten ambiguity to our perceptions of color,” likening his work to a living being that “appears to breathe or expand.”
