Fay Chandler born in 1923 in Norfolk, Virginia, and graduated from Sweet Briar College in Virginia with a degree in Sociology in 1943. In 1967 she received her Masters of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute of Art, Hoffberger School of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. Chandler grew up in the South where she defied the social norms of a “proper lady.” “I was always wondering why women were given such a particular role – at least in the South,” she says. “I rather liked the idea of shocking people, of doing something people wouldn’t expect.”
Chandler paints and uses found objects to create three-dimensional works of art. Of her work, she has said: “Without consciously or intentionally doing so, I have discovered that my subject matter focuses upon women and childhood – feminist issues.”
