Elisabeth Condon, a painter, grew up in Los Angeles. She overlays its visual memory with those of other places–Miami, Cadaques, Saratoga Springs, Sydney and Beijing–in landscapes where Yuan Dynasty scrolls meet the Flinstones.
Condon establishes idiosyncratic pictorial structures with improvisational pours of paint, then deploys sketchbook drawings and projected photographs to build space both pictorial and flat. Heeding the Tang Dynasty dictum that painting fuse observation and memory, she interweaves external and internal perceptions to impart multi-layered impressions of a particular location. Condon works in oil, acrylic and ink on paintings and drawings that vacillate from form to pattern.
In 2006, with Mernet Larsen, Condon co-curated “Dragon Veins” at USF’s Contemporary Art Museum. Since then her work has been included in exhibitions at Song Zhuang Museum, Beijing; Shenghua Art Centre, Nanjing; Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC; Tampa Museum of Art, FL, Ft. Lauderdale Museum, FL and the Housatonic Museum of Art, Bridgeport, CT. In 2009 Condon’s work was featured in a survey exhibition at the Albany Museum of Art, Albany, GA, for which a catalogue was published. Her work is represented by Lesley Heller Workspace, New York and Dorsch Gallery, Miami.
She is the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant and a Florida Individual Artist Fellowship. She has been selected for artist residencies Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, NY, Fountainhead, Miami, FL, Red Gate, Beijing, China, and Loft Nota Bene, Cadaques, Spain.
Previously Artist in Residence at the University of Knoxville, TN and the Ringling School of Art, Condon lectures on her work at numerous universities and colleges including Cooper Union School of Art, Boston University, Mount Royal College of Art and Montclair State University. Now Associate Professor at the University of South Florida, she alternates her time between Tampa and Brooklyn, NY.
