Donald Sultan

Pop and abstract painter, sculptor, and printmaker Donald Sultan is best known for his large-scale still life paintings and use of industrial materials such as aluminum, enamel, and linoleum. A prominent theme in Sultan’s works is the nature of consumerism—how organic forms such as flowers or fruit are consumed in contemporary society. “I try to pare down the images to their essence and capture the fleeting aspect of reality by pitting the gesture against the geometric—the gesture being the fluidity of the human against the geometry of the object,” he says.
