Referencing history, mythology, and his personal background, Didier William creates large-scale paintings with a complex, layered vision of the Haitian diaspora. In these works, amorphous bodies, which bear no clear markers of race or gender, move through densely patterned, spatially ambiguous worlds. Strikingly, the figures are covered with hundreds of eyes that boldly return the viewer’s gaze. To enhance their physical presence, William individually carves each eye into the wood panel support.
