Since 1968, Diana Suttenfield ‘s artwork has been exhibited in regional, national, and European group and one person venues. A past member of the Maryland Pastel Society and Baltimore Watercolor Society, her paintings won national awards and were selected for traveling exhibitions. During a 1996 one person exhibit in her main gallery, Mary Bell, Chicago, a representative from the U.S. Dept of State, Arts in Embassies, asked for her work to represent the United States in embassies abroad. Every several years the State Dept. selects one or two of her paintings.
She was a co-founder of a co-op gallery in Shepherdstown in 1973, The German Street Gallery, and in 1984 was a co-founder of the Boarman Arts Center (now the Arts Centre) in Martinsburg. She has published three books of pen and ink drawings of regional architecture. In 1981 her pen and ink drawings were published in “The C and O Canal: An Illustrated History”.
The West Virginia Women’s Commission honored her as Woman of the Year-in Art, and WV Public Television included her in a documentary about artists in 1994.
Born in Washington, D.C., she lived in Europe for many years–and in other states–before moving to Shepherdstown, where she has lived and maintained a studio since 1962.
