Self-taught artist Debora Muhl creates basketry with a technique based on traditional coiling, hand-sewing sweetgrass bundles—which is traditionally collected, sorted, combed, and dried into bundles by Indigenous peoples in the United States and Canada—with waxed Irish linen threads or artificial sinew. Muhl leaves the grasses in their natural state to preserve their aromas and often begins her free-form sculptures with a unique cut-out segment of gourd, designing in the process of creating.
