Carlos Rodriguez, known as Carlos Mare or Mare139—“Mare” short for “Nightmare”—began writing graffiti on New York City subway trains in the mid-1970s. A decade later, he translated that same lettering style into three dimensions, creating K, a 1985 metal sculpture recognized as one of the earliest examples of graffiti-based sculpture as a fine art form. His work blends graffiti lettering with the fragmented structures of cubism, futurism, and the avant-garde. The paintings Head Spinner in the Cipher and Battle in the Cipher are inspired by breaking, an art form he witnessed during its early years in New York.
