Visual wordsmith Brooke Jana Cannon, known professionally as Brooke Jana, forms her digital images using text. Her inspiration varies from Elizabethan tapestries and Regency-era dining plates to nature, social issues, and environmental concerns. The artist seeks “to create pieces which are pleasing to the eye on a holistic level and intriguing to the mind upon closer inspection.” She chooses a source such as Project Gutenberg or the Department of Natural Resources, uses a text analyzer to determine the most frequently occurring words, then creates an image using Adobe Photoshop. Once a draft of the image is complete—with anywhere from a few hundred to thousands of words—the artist adjusts the colors, fonts, spacing, and text orientation. Printing on acid-free and bright white archival matte paper highlights the vibrant colors and black print.
