Bob Johnston, who is based at The Ulster Folk Museum, has been creating contemporary, showpiece willow sculptures since 2000. Bob initially trained as a textile weaver and since turning his hand to willow, has studied with master basket makers from Armagh, Galway and Villaines les Rochers, France.
The sculptural process begins in the ground, by growing and sourcing over 40 different varieties of willow. This diversity allows Bob to choose from a large palette of colours, textures and diameters of willow rods. Each willow rod is carefully selected and used in a dense, random, swirling weave; creating form with detail and giving a feeling of movement with a hint of expression. Each piece is woven by hand and completely unique.
Bob’s award winning work can be found in individual collections, museums, galleries and the film industry both nationally and internationally.
