“As a first generation Mexican American artist, my work’s sole purpose has been in the renewing and recreating of indigenous cultural awareness. Identifying and recognizing the empowerment that indigenous craftsmanship re-designed as -Fine Art continues to be one of my primary goals as an artist.”
Beatriz Vásquez grew up on the border towns of Brownsville, Texas and Matamoros, Mexico. Vásquez is a visual artist working in papel picado (paper cut). Her family migrated to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1990, where her creative talents sparked the need to more deeply connect with her Mexican culture and heritage.
Beatriz holds a B.A. in Fine Art from Herron School of Art and Design—Indiana University in Indianapolis, IN. Vásquez has been an Artist Residency at the Eiteljorg Museum of Native American Art (2012), IndyParks Artist Resident (2013), Indianapolis Public Schools District Artist (2013-2014), and Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis (2015). The Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship allowed her to attend Artist Residencies in Santiago, Chile and Oaxaca, Mexico.
