Dominican painter and sculptor Amaya Salazar is known for her brightly-colored images of faceless women in lush, jungle-like settings. In pieces like Webs II, the familiar imagery from her paintings is transferred to three dimensions. It becomes somewhat abstracted, as positive and negative space—rather than the shading and color variation of her paintings—define her forms.
Her work focuses on anonymous women, images of mothers and children in particular. This gives her pieces have a timeless, iconic quality. Webs II almost has the feeling of a Medieval or Renaissance image of the Virgin and Child, but that feeling is balanced by Salazar’s decidedly modernist technique and materials balances.
