Blair Thurman is best known for his practice in both painting, in his shaped canvases, and neon sculptures, in his series of shaped neons. Whatever the medium he is using, he always works with the concerns and interests of a painter; in his neon pieces, he replaces the painter’s obsession for light with real light. His geometrical paintings on shaped canvases recreate and simplify real objects, virtually abstracting them. In his work appears an iconography linked to roads and tracks, especially as they are figured in the more formalized world of toys, miniature roads and tracks, such as Hot Wheels. Thurman translates the signs of American reality and subculture, for instance the automobile as an expression of individual liberty, into art.
