Walter Elmer Schofield is considered central to Pennsylvania impressionism, a twentieth-century movement notable for its thick brushwork and its focus on landscape painting active in and around Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Working en plein air, or outdoors, he painted atmospheric landscapes depicting the sun and bright colors but became renowned for his heavy brushstrokes of snowscapes and rushing streams. “Zero weather, rain, falling snow, wind—all of these things to contend with only make the open-air painter love the fight…He is an open-air man, wholesome, healthy, hearty, and his art, sane and straightforward, reflects his temperament,” he said of painting en plein air.
