Antoine Placide Gibert

Antoine Placide Gibert specialized in genre painting and portraiture. Published as a print by American lithographer Philip Haas, Valley Forge, 1777 was potentially painted and drawn by Gibert. “Gen. Washington & Lafayette visiting the suffering Part of the Army” is printed underneath the title, and this lithograph shows just that: General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette visiting an encampment of American soldiers in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, during the American Revolutionary War. The army lacked sufficient food and supplies at this point, and soldiers constructed log cabins and devised makeshift clothing and gear while waiting for provisions.
