Jeff Kahm

Jeff Kahm, an artist with Plains Cree heritage, described his work as rooted in Indigenous abstraction and modernist aesthetics. “I began exploring abstract work in the early nineties during undergraduate studies, where I was introduced to various art movements of Western art history including the tenets of modernism. Modernist practices, which set aside artistic traditions of the past in favor of experimentation, caught my interest at the time…My affinity with Indigenous art history (pre-Modern art) is equally important in my exploration of non-objective art, which includes recognizing parallels between Indigenous and modern abstract painting. While creative use of form and visual language in each genre is very distinctive, these great artistic traditions remain a source of inspiration and a point of departure for my own work,” he said.
