Romul Nutiu is the preeminent exemplar of Abstract Expressionism in Romania. With a clear conceptual vision, Nutiu played with form and movement, creating an informal universe. Nutiu’s work possesses a rare balance of structure and improvisation, combined with a daring sense use of color. His tendency toward experimental games eventually transcended the limitations of a canvas and resulted in installations which can best be described as paintings in space.
Nutiu studied at the the Art Institute ‘Ion Andreescu’ in Cluj, Romania, and at the Art Institute in Bucharest. He lived, worked, and taught at the Art Institute in Timisoara, Romania. His works are part of the collection of Contemporary Art Museum from Bucharest, Brukenthal National Museum, Sibiu, the Art Museum of Banat, Timisoara, and private collections in Germany, France, Italy, the United States, and Canada.
