Robert LaHotan was a painter who executed his landscapes and still lifes in bold colors and broad brushstrokes. LaHotan was influenced by late nineteenth-century post-impressionist French artists like Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, who painted intimate, sun filled scenes. Born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, LaHotan grew up in western Massachusetts before moving to New York City to study painting. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Columbia University, New York, and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Freiburg, Germany. LaHotan divided his time between New York City, where he taught painting and art history at the Dalton School, and Cranberry Island, Maine
