Martin Kotler

Martin Kotler has worked at the Smithsonian American Art Museum since 1981. He holds a master’s degree in fine arts from American University. An accomplished artist, Kotler’s paintings have been featured in several solo exhibitions in Washington, D.C. In addition to lecturing on period frames, he teaches at the Washington Studio School. Previously, he worked at the Newark Museum.

“I feel my art is a painterly way of seeing, as a plein air artist who searches for the right place, right light, at the right time of year. Through these paintings, I try to talk about who we are, and if I might, add some visual moment to our being.”
