Margaret Gerding

Margaret Gerding’s paintings celebrate the subtle beauty of nature unspoiled by civilization. Her moving, multi-layered skies light her lush tree-filled landscapes to capture a moment in time that is both peaceful and evocative.

Her serene landscapes are achieved through a skillful use of textured underpainting combined with multiple layers of color applied with thin glazes. A thin, seemingly burnished edge typically characterizes her works in oil on panel or linen.

Margaret Gerding received her BFA from the University of Massachusetts: Dartmouth, North Dartmouth, MA in 1983. She received additional art training at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln MA, the Worcester Art Museum and a summer workshop with Wolf Kahn at Bennington College, VT.

“To capture the essence of a landscape at a specific moment in time, before changes have begun has always been the challenge that drives me,” says Gerding. “In order to do this, it is necessary to spend a significant amount of time outdoors, directly experiencing and observing the land. In this way, even subtle colors come alive. And it is usually a spot of color that attracts me to a particular place. I am always drawn to areas that have not been disturbed by human development. These areas for me have the greatest sense of peace which I then try to convey to the viewer of my paintings, representing a moment in time which is both striking and memorable.”

A selection of her corporate collectors include: Fidelity Investments, Boston, MA; The Westin Hotel, Boston, MA; Peoples Heritage Bank, Portland, ME; Gilberti, Spitiller, Inc., Cleveland, OH; and Unifirst Corporation, Wilmington, MA. Margaret Gerding has exhibited her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and is currently represented by galleries in Norwalk, CT; Boston, MA; Portland, ME; Chicago, IL and Santa Fe, NM
